# A next-generation municipal website

Designing a municipal website means turning real needs into simple answers. For this municipality, we put the resident experience at the center: finding information, completing a request, or reporting a problem should take seconds, not minutes.

## Context and goals

The municipality wanted a site that was clearer, faster, and more accessible. Our mandate: cut the time it takes to find information, simplify online requests, and give internal teams a smooth editing environment. We also built in strong accessibility requirements (WCAG 2.1 AA) and compliance obligations, so the site would genuinely serve every resident within a solid legal framework.

## Our approach

We started with discovery workshops across municipal departments to map out the real needs. From there came a task-oriented information architecture: find, do, report. The resulting design system lets teams assemble consistent pages quickly instead of starting from scratch every time. Accessibility was built in from the wireframes on: verified contrast, visible focus states, text alternatives, and keyboard navigation planned up front rather than bolted on later.

## Experience and features

"Services" pages follow standardized editorial templates that guide the writing and keep things consistent. Search suggests results and understands synonyms, so residents land on the right content faster. We built in news and public notices with filtering and archiving, plus an alert system for fast communication during roadwork, closures, or emergencies. Editorial building blocks — documents, maps, FAQs, calls to action — drop in anywhere, in the right format, in a couple of clicks.

## Performance, SEO, and accessibility

The site loads fast, even on mobile. We set performance budgets, optimized media, trimmed scripts, and added targeted preloading. The result: LCP under 1.5s and Core Web Vitals solidly in the green. On discoverability, structured tags and metadata strengthen SEO, while navigation stays fully usable by keyboard with a focus state that's always visible.

## Stack and implementation

The technical foundation runs on Next.js 14 with SSR/ISR chosen per page based on freshness and performance needs. TypeScript and Tailwind CSS keep things robust and maintainable, and design tokens keep the visual language consistent as the site grows. Native media optimization and CDN caching speed up rendering, and privacy-first analytics measure usage without piling on unnecessary cookies.

## Governance and handoff

We documented the design system and contribution guidelines, then trained the internal teams — editor, approver, administrator — to make publishing smooth. Approval workflows and secure previews let the team iterate quickly with no surprises at launch.

The municipality ended up with a platform that's faster, more inclusive, and built to last — one the internal team can evolve on their own. And above all: a site that actually serves its residents.
